Summary
A free screen recorder for Mac is already on your machine: the built-in Screenshot toolbar, QuickTime Player and the screencapture command all cost $0, and OBS Studio adds scenes and system audio. Which one fits depends on what you record, which audio you need, how long you record, your macOS version and whether you start it from a shortcut or a script. This picker scores four methods against those five answers and shows the limit of each, so you know before you hit Record.
Find the Right Free Screen Recorder for Mac
Five questions score four real ways to record your Mac screen: the built-in toolbar, QuickTime Player, OBS Studio and screencapture. No download, no signup.
Four methods, scored on what they can actually do
Capability first
Each answer adds or removes points based on a documented limit. The built-in toolbar records your microphone but not Mac sound. QuickTime Player is the one that records an iPhone. If a method cannot do what you asked, the card says so.
Setup cost counts
OBS Studio is the most capable free option and also the longest to set up. Short clips lose it points, long sessions and multi-source layouts win it points. The toolbar is the reverse: zero setup, one source.
Permissions, stated once
Every method needs Screen Recording permission in Privacy & Security, and the microphone needs its own. The top result tells you how to start, so you are recording within a minute. If the file comes out with no sound, the cause is almost always a missing permission or the wrong input, not a broken recorder.
The Terminal option most Mac users skip
macOS ships a command line recorder. Run screencapture -v -g demo.mov and it records the main display with audio from your default input until you press Ctrl-C. Add -V 300 and it stops by itself after 300 seconds. It has no interface, no preview and no mixing, which is the point: you can call it from a script, a shell alias or a launcher shortcut. If you never open Terminal, ignore it and pick the toolbar. If you do, it is the fastest way to get a clip: no window opens, no app launches, and the file lands in the folder you ran the command from.
- Ships with macOS, nothing to install
- Fixed-length clips with -V seconds
- No system audio, no webcam overlay
- Check man screencapture for your macOS version
